ANU Pathway Diplomas provide a route into an aligned bachelor degree at The Australian National University for students whose qualifications meet Diploma entry requirements. Students complete a year of study at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra, with progression to an aligned bachelor degree carrying 48 units of credit, subject to the required Diploma GPA. Indicative annual tuition for each Diploma in 2027 is AUD 57,640.
What the Diploma year involves
Each Pathway Diploma is an AQF Level 5 qualification comprising eight courses over 12 months of full-time study across two semesters. The curriculum includes ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with bachelor students.
Students are full ANU students from the start. The programs are delivered by an entity wholly owned by ANU. Teaching takes place in person at Acton Campus, with no remote option. Entry is currently available for Semester 1 only.
Although the Diploma is a qualification in its own right, international applicants must apply for a packaged Diploma-to-Bachelor sequence. It cannot be undertaken with the intention of studying only the one-year Diploma.
Programs and the degrees they lead to
The required progression GPA depends on the destination degree.
| Pathway Diploma | Aligned bachelor degree | Required Diploma GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Computing | Bachelor of Computing | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Asian Studies | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy | 4.6 |
Progression into an aligned degree carries one year, or 48 units, of credit. The destination degree therefore matters when choosing a Diploma: the Politics and International Relations pathway, for example, has different GPA requirements across its aligned degrees.
Students may also apply for a non-aligned bachelor degree after completing the Diploma. Such applications are assessed on the same basis as those from students with one year of undergraduate study at ANU. Credit is assessed case by case, so a change of program does not guarantee a full year of credit.
Academic entry starts at selection rank 70
The Diploma entry threshold is a selection rank of 70, with the pathway intended for students in the 70–79.99 range. Students with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.
There are no subject prerequisites for Diploma admission, and adjustment factors do not apply.
ANU also recognises additional entry routes, including a graded AQF Certificate IV and the Work and Life Experience Scheme, formerly Special Adult Entry. The General Secondary Education Certificate known as Tawjihi or Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama is another Diploma entry route, with an academic average of 80% plus an SAT score of at least 1090.
The following examples show qualification scores corresponding to the Diploma’s selection-rank-70 threshold. They are a partial list, and the qualification and scoring method must match the applicant’s results.
| Qualification | Diploma threshold |
|---|---|
| Gao-Kao — Shanghai | 446/660 |
| Gao-Kao — Hainan | 608/900 |
| Gao-Kao — other | 506/750 |
| HKDSE | 11 |
| ISC India | 77 |
| IB — Australian schools, November 2022 onwards | 26.75 |
| IB — overseas schools, or Australian results before November 2022 | 27 |
| GCE A-Levels — best three | 10 |
| GCE A-Levels — best four | 12 |
| SAT | 1090 |
| ACT | 20 |
| Singapore A-Levels | 6 |
| STPM — best three | 6 |
| STPM — best four | 5 |
| UEC | 24 |
These are qualification-based entry comparisons. They do not create separate admission requirements based on nationality.
Predicted results are accepted where ANU already accepts them for bachelor admission. The Diploma also accepts predicted results for Tawjihi or Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama under the academic-average and SAT conditions above.
English requirements and packaged language study
Direct entry requires IELTS overall 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent result. This is the same English standard as undergraduate entry.
ANU ELICOS can be packaged with the pathway. The listed IELTS entry levels are:
| ELICOS duration | Overall IELTS | Minimum band |
|---|---|---|
| 10 weeks | 6.0 | 5.5 |
| 20 weeks | 5.5 | 5.0 |
These scores are entry levels for the language courses, rather than direct-entry scores for the Diploma. As recorded in ANU’s guide information available on 3 November 2026, ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 had closed.
Tuition and scholarships
The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for each Pathway Diploma. This covers the indicative annual Diploma tuition amount; it is not the total cost of the packaged Diploma and bachelor sequence.
ANU states that Diploma tuition aligns with the first year of the corresponding bachelor degree. Financial planning for the international pathway must cover the Diploma-to-Bachelor sequence.
Most students are not eligible for the ANU International Achievement Award or Vice-Chancellor’s Award during the Diploma. Scholarship assessment takes place on articulation to the bachelor degree where the Diploma GPA is at least 4.6, equivalent to selection rank 85. Meeting that threshold does not itself establish that a scholarship will be awarded.
The stated exception is for Pacific Region citizens, who receive a 50% tuition discount under the International Achievement Award from Diploma commencement.
Support during study and progression
Support begins before classes, with enrolment counselling and onboarding. During the Diploma, students receive one-to-one academic advice, monitoring of engagement and progress, and proactive support where needed.
The support model also includes referrals to campus services and help with the transition from Diploma to bachelor study. Diploma students have the same access to accommodation as bachelor students.
How international applications are organised
The application route depends on the applicant’s study circumstances:
- Onshore applicants completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 apply through UAC.
- Other international applicants apply through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.
For the packaged pathway, ANU issues one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and another for the bachelor degree, supporting one visa application.
Before applying, the key details to establish are the qualification assessment, English result, chosen Diploma, aligned bachelor degree, required progression GPA and funding for the full study sequence. The choice of bachelor degree should come early, because it determines both the progression target and whether the planned credit arrangement applies.
