Ask most applicants why they’re not considering the University of Tasmania, and the answer is almost always “it’s not Go8.” That’s true. It’s also not the point.
UTAS was founded in 1890. It’s Australia’s fourth-oldest university, and one of six “sandstone universities” — the historic founding cohort that also includes Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Adelaide and UWA. Rent in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie is lower than Sydney or Melbourne — genuinely, not marginally. Exact numbers move with the market, so check current listings rather than trusting a fixed figure from any one source. What that buys you isn’t just savings — it’s less time spent working to cover rent and more time actually studying, which matters more than most applicants weigh it.
English requirements sit around IELTS 6.0 overall for most undergraduate programs and roughly 6.5 for postgraduate, though nursing, teaching and other registration-linked programs set their own thresholds. Most new international undergraduate and postgraduate coursework applicants are automatically assessed for the Tasmanian International Scholarship — a 25% tuition reduction for the duration of the course, with a short list of exceptions (Medicine, Dementia Care, AMC Seafaring). Because it’s automatic rather than a separate application, confirm your specific program is covered rather than assuming it.

If your field is marine science, Antarctic research, or a health discipline tied to Hobart’s clinical infrastructure — this isn’t a fallback option, it’s arguably a better fit than most Go8 campuses.
