The University of New Brunswick (新不伦瑞克大学) is a public university in Canada’s eastern province of New Brunswick that describes itself as leading discovery and innovation since 1785. It runs two campuses — Fredericton and Saint John — and offers more than 100 study options across more than 60 disciplines, with a student-to-faculty ratio around 15:1. Who the University of New Brunswick is
The University of New Brunswick was founded in 1785 and its about page describes it as offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 60 disciplines, with more than 100 programs to choose from. The institution is organized around two campuses. The Fredericton campus is the main campus and hosts the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, Faculty of Kinesiology, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Nursing. The Saint John campus hosts the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering, health programs, Nursing and Social Work. Several degrees run on both campuses — the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration among them — so choosing a campus is really choosing a program mix and a city.
Programs and where they are taught
At Fredericton, the University of New Brunswick offers Bachelor of Arts majors including anthropology, classical studies, creative writing, criminology and criminal justice, drama, economics, English, French, history, international development studies, music, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology; Bachelor of Business Administration majors in accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance and a combined economics and finance; the Bachelor of Computer Science; engineering degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, geological, geomatics and software engineering; the Bachelor of Science in Forestry and the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management; the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Studies; the Bachelor of Nursing; and a Juris Doctor at the Faculty of Law.
At Saint John, the University of New Brunswick offers Bachelor of Business Administration majors in accounting, digital business design, economics, finance and entrepreneurship, plus the Bachelor of Applied Management with accounting, general business and hospitality and tourism streams; arts majors including comparative literature, criminal justice studies, economics, English, French, history, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, politics, psychology, sociology and statistics; the Bachelor of Computer Science; the Bachelor of Health with majors in biomedical sciences and health, management in health, and society and health; the Bachelor of Health Sciences in radiography and respiratory therapy; the Bachelor of Nursing; and the Bachelor of Social Work. Engineering has its own geography at the University of New Brunswick: most programs start with two years at either campus and finish at Fredericton, Environmental Engineering runs all four years at Saint John, and Geomatics and Geological Engineering begin at either campus but complete at Fredericton.
Entry requirements: academics and English
The University of New Brunswick assesses international applicants on two tracks. Academically, the school publishes program-specific subject requirements for each qualification. For the International Baccalaureate, applicants need at least three higher-level subjects, with business, computer science and engineering programs specifying mathematics and science subjects and a minimum overall average of 4; meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission. Applicants transferring from post-secondary study outside Canada or the United States must submit a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation, and everyone must disclose any prior post-secondary attendance in Canada or abroad — failure to disclose can lead to rejection of the application or suspension after enrolment.
For English, most undergraduate programs at the University of New Brunswick require IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 85 (or, for tests taken from January 2026, an overall of 4.5 with at least 4.5 in speaking and writing), CAEL 60, Pearson PTE Academic 59, Cambridge English 176 or Duolingo 115. Nursing, Education and Arts at Fredericton and Nursing and Health Sciences at Saint John require the equivalent of IELTS 7.0. Exemptions apply to applicants who completed at least one year at a Canadian high school with 70% or better in Grade 12 English (four years for Nursing and Health Sciences), or one year at an English-speaking high school in a country on the university’s list. Applicants below the band can enter on conditional admission: the Program of Academic English Preparation (PAEP) at Fredericton, where students with IELTS 5.5–6.0 can take academic courses in select faculties, or Saint John College’s EAP and ESL Support programs, which follow the September, January and May terms.
Costs: the 2026–2027 academic year
Tuition for full-time international undergraduates at the University of New Brunswick for 2026–2027 (effective 1 September 2026) varies by program. At Fredericton, annual tuition is 20,903 CAD for Arts, 22,996 CAD for Business Administration, 22,514 CAD for Computer Science, 25,871 CAD for Engineering and 21,618 CAD for Science; with mandatory fees the annual totals are 22,754, 24,847, 24,365, 27,722 and 23,469 CAD respectively. Saint John charges the same program tuition with slightly lower fees: annual totals of 22,490 CAD for Arts, 24,583 CAD for Business, 27,458 CAD for Engineering and 23,205 CAD for Science. Mandatory fees include technology, facilities and wellness levies, student union health and dental coverage, a bus pass for international students at Fredericton, and emergency health insurance. Tuition and fees are due at the start of each term, and the university charges a 75 CAD late payment fee.
Residence rates for 2026–2027 are published per campus. At Fredericton, a renovated single room with private bathroom is 10,585 CAD per year including deposit, a classic single 8,558 CAD, and classic doubles from 6,520 CAD; required meal plans run from 6,262 to 6,712 CAD per year. At Saint John, the Barry and Flora Beckett residence single with private bathroom is 9,002 CAD per year, and Sir James Dunn singles start at 6,839 CAD. Residence fees include the room, heating and high-speed internet, and most residences require a meal plan; Fredericton charges an 800 CAD non-refundable residence application deposit. Fees are reviewed each year, so treat the university’s current published versions as the reference.
Application process, deadlines and conditional admission
Applications to the University of New Brunswick go through the online application account: choose a campus and program, check the requirements, create the account, pay the 125 CAD non-refundable international application fee, and submit official or notarized transcripts (with certified translations if not in English), any relevant academic test scores and English proficiency results. Transfer applicants add course outlines and, for studies outside Canada or the US, a WES ICAP evaluation. International application materials are mailed to the Office of the Registrar in Saint John.
The general deadline for most programs is 31 March. For fall entry (September start) the university suggests applying before 1 June; for winter entry (January start), before 1 October; for summer, before 1 February. Program-specific deadlines include 15 December for the Bachelor of Education at both campuses, 31 March for Kinesiology and 15 February for Nursing, with Education at Fredericton, Kinesiology and Nursing offering fall entry only. Offers of admission are accepted by 15 May, which is also the residence confirmation deadline, and the university notes that fall applications are still accepted after the general deadline while seats remain. Entrance scholarship applications are due 1 March.
Study permit, conditional entry and verifying the details
Since 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has required a provincial attestation letter (PAL) with most study permit applications, and a student can hold only one PAL from New Brunswick; admitted international students follow the University of New Brunswick’s step-by-step PAL and study permit instructions. From 1 January 2026, Master’s and PhD students at public institutions are exempt from the PAL requirement and from federal cap allocations, and doctoral applicants applying from outside Canada benefit from a 14-day processing period. Students admitted conditionally on English can still obtain a study visa; PAEP and Saint John College programs follow the university’s September, January and May terms, and residence room assignments are released around 15 July.
