Which English Tests Do UK ISC Foundation and Pre-Masters Programmes Accept? IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo vs TOEFL Conversion Guide

Quick Answer

International students applying to UK pathway programmes at Study Group International Study Centres (ISCs) can choose from four UKVI-approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs): IELTS Academic for UKVI, Pearson PTE Academic UKVI, PSI Skills for English UKVI, and Trinity ISE UKVI. Additionally, many ISCs accept non-SELT proficiency tests including Duolingo, TOEFL iBT, LanguageCert International ESOL, Password Skills, and the Oxford Test of English — but only for direct entry to the pathway programme where the visa does not require a SELT. For pre-sessional English courses taken in the UK before the pathway programme, a UKVI SELT is mandatory. High school English qualifications (Indian Std XII, O Level, IB Diploma, and others) can satisfy English requirements for International Foundation Year (IFY) programmes at most ISCs. The entry score ranges from IELTS 5.5 and equivalent across all four skills for most pre-master’s programmes, down to IELTS 4.5 or equivalent for two-semester foundation programmes. This guide maps every test type and score band across the Study Group ISC network for the 2026/27 academic cycle.

SELT vs Non-SELT: The Critical Distinction Every Applicant Must Understand

The most common point of confusion for international students applying to UK pathway programmes is the difference between a SELT and a non-SELT English test — and when each is required. This distinction matters for your visa application, not just your university admission.

  1. SELT (Secure English Language Test): A UKVI-approved test taken at an authorised test centre under specific security conditions. Only four test families carry SELT status for UK Student Route visa applications as of 2026: IELTS Academic for UKVI, Pearson PTE Academic UKVI, PSI Skills for English UKVI, and Trinity ISE UKVI. When your visa application requires evidence of English proficiency — which is the case for most pathway applicants — you must submit a SELT result. The Home Office’s approved test list is updated periodically; UNILINK Education advises checking the current list at gov.uk before booking any test.

  2. Non-SELT (Language Proficiency Test): A broader category that includes Duolingo English Test, standard IELTS Academic (non-UKVI), TOEFL iBT, LanguageCert International ESOL, Password Skills, the Oxford Test of English, and online versions of IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL. These tests are accepted by many ISCs for admission assessment purposes — the ISC will issue your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) based on a non-SELT result — but they cannot be used to satisfy UKVI English requirements if your visa category demands a SELT.

The practical rule is this: if you are taking a pre-sessional English course in the UK before starting your pathway programme, you need a UKVI SELT. If you are entering the pathway programme directly from your home country and the ISC confirms it can sponsor your CAS with a non-SELT score, you may avoid needing a UKVI test. However, UNILINK Education’s experience with over 300 Study Group pathway placements shows that taking a UKVI IELTS at the outset keeps every option open and avoids the risk of discovering mid-application that your chosen test is insufficient for visa purposes.

Several ISCs — including Durham, Sheffield, Leeds, and Cardiff — accept both SELT and non-SELT scores for direct pre-master’s entry. But the safest path, and the one UNILINK recommends to all applicants, is to sit IELTS Academic for UKVI. It satisfies every requirement across every ISC and every visa scenario.

The Four UKVI-Approved SELTs: What They Are and How They Compare

The UK Home Office maintains a list of approved Secure English Language Tests. As of the 2026/27 academic cycle, four test families are approved for Student Route visa applications made outside the UK. Each test has specific score reporting formats and is accepted at different ISCs under different thresholds.

IELTS Academic for UKVI

The most widely recognised UKVI SELT, accepted at every Study Group ISC without exception. The test assesses four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and reports scores on a 0–9 band scale in 0.5 increments. The UKVI variant is identical in content and difficulty to standard IELTS Academic; the difference is that it is taken at a UKVI-approved test centre with additional identity verification and a Test Report Form that explicitly states “UKVI” on the certificate.

Typical pre-master’s entry thresholds range from IELTS 5.5 overall with no band below 5.5 (Cardiff, Leeds, Royal Holloway, LJMU, Huddersfield) to IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 (Durham, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Sussex, Surrey, Kingston). Aberdeen uniquely requires Writing 6.0 with other bands at 5.5. Foundation programmes accept lower thresholds, typically IELTS 4.5–5.0 overall depending on programme length.

For score reporting: IELTS results are available 13 calendar days after the test date for paper-based tests and 3–5 days for computer-delivered tests. UKVI test sessions typically run less frequently than standard IELTS, so UNILINK advises booking 6–8 weeks before your application deadline.

Pearson PTE Academic UKVI

A fully computer-based test with automated scoring, PTE Academic UKVI reports scores on a 10–90 scale and delivers results typically within 48 hours. Its speed and entirely digital delivery make it a popular alternative to IELTS, particularly among students who prefer typing to handwriting.

ISC score thresholds for PTE Academic UKVI track closely with IELTS equivalents. The following conversions are used by Study Group ISCs for pre-master’s programmes:

  1. PTE 51 overall with 51 in each skill: equivalent to IELTS 5.5/5.5, accepted at Leeds ISC and Cardiff ISC for pre-master’s entry
  2. PTE 59 overall with 51 in each skill: equivalent to IELTS 6.0/5.5, accepted at Durham ISC and Sheffield ISC
  3. PTE 59 overall with 59 in each skill: equivalent to IELTS 6.0/6.0, a higher threshold required at some ISCs for specific programmes

PTE Academic UKVI test centres are less widely available than IELTS centres, particularly in parts of Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Check the Pearson website for the nearest UKVI-approved PTE centre before committing to this test.

PSI Skills for English UKVI

A relatively newer entrant to the UKVI SELT list, PSI Skills for English UKVI is a four-skills test available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats. It reports scores using the CEFR framework (A1–C2) rather than numerical bands, which can create conversion complexity when ISCs publish requirements in IELTS bands.

PSI Skills for English UKVI’s CEFR B2 level (Pass with Merit or Distinction) is generally equated to IELTS 5.5–6.5. However, ISCs vary in their acceptance of PSI scores and their specific CEFR-to-band conversion. Before booking a PSI test, confirm with the specific ISC — or with UNILINK Education — that your target ISC accepts PSI at the required CEFR level for your programme.

Trinity ISE UKVI

Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English (ISE) is a UKVI SELT available at levels ISE I (B1), ISE II (B2), ISE III (C1), and ISE IV (C2). The test assesses integrated skills — Reading into Writing, Listening into Speaking — rather than discrete skill modules, which makes it feel more like authentic academic language use.

Trinity ISE is less commonly referenced in Study Group ISC entry requirements than IELTS or PTE. However, it is a valid UKVI SELT, and several ISCs will accept a Trinity ISE result on a case-by-case basis, typically requiring ISE II (B2) with Merit or Distinction for pre-master’s entry. Trinity test centres are concentrated in the UK, making this test more practical for applicants already in the country.

Non-SELT Language Proficiency Tests Accepted by ISCs

Beyond the four UKVI SELTs, Study Group ISCs accept a wide range of non-SELT proficiency tests for direct pathway programme entry. These tests are sufficient for admission decisions and CAS issuance when the applicant does not require a pre-sessional English course in the UK. The following breakdown covers each test, its scoring format, and where it is accepted for 2026/27 entry.

Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is taken entirely online from home, costs significantly less than IELTS or PTE (typically USD 59–65), and delivers results within 48 hours. It scores on a 10–160 scale with integrated sub-scores for Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production.

DET acceptance across Study Group ISCs for pre-master’s programmes in 2026/27:

  1. Durham ISC: Duolingo 110 overall with 100 in each sub-score. Equivalent to IELTS 6.0/5.5.
  2. Aberdeen ISC: Duolingo 120 overall with specific sub-score requirements: Literacy 95, Comprehension 95, Conversation 95, Production 105. Equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with Writing 6.0.
  3. Royal Holloway ISC: Duolingo 95–100 overall. Equivalent to IELTS 5.5–6.0.

Important limitation: Duolingo is a non-SELT. It cannot be used for a UK visa application where the Home Office requires a SELT. If you plan to take a pre-sessional English course in the UK before your pathway programme, the Duolingo result — however strong — will not satisfy UKVI. Keep this in mind and verify your visa route with UNILINK before relying on Duolingo.

IELTS Academic (Non-UKVI) and IELTS Academic Online

The standard IELTS Academic and its online variant are identical in content to IELTS Academic for UKVI but lack the UKVI designation on the Test Report Form. Most ISCs accept standard IELTS Academic scores for direct pathway entry under the same score thresholds as IELTS for UKVI. The online version offers the convenience of at-home testing with human proctoring.

Score thresholds are the same as IELTS for UKVI: 5.5/5.5 for lower-tier entry, 6.0/5.5 for higher-tier entry. The restriction is entirely visa-related, not academic.

LanguageCert Academic SELT and LanguageCert International ESOL

LanguageCert offers two test families relevant to ISC applicants:

  1. LanguageCert Academic SELT: A UKVI-approved SELT available at test centres. Reports scores on a 0–100 scale per skill. Accepted at Durham ISC (65/60), Sheffield ISC (65/60), Leeds ISC (60/60), and Cardiff ISC (60/60) for pre-master’s entry.
  2. LanguageCert International ESOL: A non-SELT proficiency test available in both paper-based and computer-based formats at test centres. Reports scores on a 0–50 scale per skill. Leeds ISC accepts LanguageCert International ESOL at High Pass 33/50 for pre-master’s entry.

LanguageCert has been gaining adoption among UK pathway providers due to its flexible scheduling and rapid results (typically 3–5 working days for computer-based tests). It is particularly strong in Europe, Latin America, and parts of Africa where IELTS test dates may be limited.

PTE Academic (Non-UKVI) and PTE Academic Online

The standard PTE Academic and its online variant use the same 10–90 scoring scale as PTE Academic UKVI. Most ISCs accept these for direct pathway entry under the same score thresholds: 51/51 for IELTS 5.5-equivalent entry, 59/51 for IELTS 6.0-equivalent entry. PTE Academic Online is a non-SELT and cannot replace a UKVI SELT when one is required.

TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Home Edition

TOEFL iBT is accepted at the majority of Study Group ISCs for pre-master’s entry, with score thresholds that vary by centre. Important note for 2026/27: ETS revised the TOEFL iBT scoring format in early 2026, reducing the number of questions and changing section score weightings. Pre-January 2026 scores are reported on the legacy 0–120 scale; post-January 2026 scores use a revised numerical scale with different conversion points.

Conversion examples for Study Group ISC pre-master’s entry:

  1. Leeds ISC (IELTS 5.5 equivalent): TOEFL iBT 72 (Reading 18, Writing 17, Listening 17, Speaking 20) on the legacy scale. Post-January 2026 equivalent is approximately 4 on the revised scale.
  2. Sheffield ISC (IELTS 6.0 equivalent): TOEFL iBT 78 (Reading 18, Writing 17, Listening 17, Speaking 20) on the legacy scale. Post-January 2026 equivalent is approximately 4.5 on the revised scale.
  3. Durham ISC (IELTS 6.0 equivalent): TOEFL iBT 78 (Reading 18, Writing 17, Listening 17, Speaking 20) on the legacy scale. Post-January 2026 equivalent is approximately 4.5.

The TOEFL iBT Home Edition offers the same test content from home with live proctoring but is a non-SELT. As with all non-SELT tests, verify your visa route before relying on it.

Oxford Test of English

The Oxford Test of English is a computer-based, adaptive proficiency test aligned to the CEFR framework. It reports scores at CEFR levels (A2, B1, B2) with numerical scores within each level. Accepted at a limited number of ISCs, typically for foundation-level entry where CEFR B1–B2 is sufficient. Less commonly referenced for pre-master’s entry, which generally requires CEFR B2 at minimum.

Password Skills Solo and Password Skills Plus

Password Skills is a UK-based, online English test that assesses the four skills and reports CEFR-aligned scores. The Solo variant is taken independently online; the Plus variant is taken at an approved test centre with invigilation. Accepted by some Study Group ISCs, particularly for foundation programme entry. Acceptance for pre-master’s programmes is less established — confirm with the specific ISC before booking.

High School English Qualifications for International Foundation Year Entry

International Foundation Year (IFY) and International Year One (IYO) programmes typically accept a broader range of English qualifications than pre-master’s programmes, including high school English results from recognised education systems. This is one of the most cost-effective routes to satisfying English requirements, as it eliminates the need for a separate English test entirely.

The following high school qualifications are commonly accepted by Study Group ISCs for IFY English entry in 2026/27:

  1. Indian Standard XII (CBSE/ISC/State Boards): A score of 65–75% in English at Class XII is typically accepted as equivalent to IELTS 5.5–6.0 for foundation entry. Most ISCs require the English score from a recognised board examination — CBSE and ISC scores are most readily accepted; some state board results require additional verification.
  2. O Level / GCSE / IGCSE English: A Grade C or 4 in O Level English Language, GCSE English Language, or IGCSE English as a First Language is typically accepted as equivalent to IELTS 6.0+. IGCSE English as a Second Language at Grade B or 6 may also satisfy requirements at several ISCs. This route is common for students from British-pattern education systems in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
  3. AS-Level English: An AS-Level in English Language or English Literature at Grade D or above is generally accepted as equivalent to IELTS 6.0+. The qualification must typically be from a recognised UK or international examination board (Cambridge, Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC).
  4. IB Diploma English: IB English A: Language and Literature or English A: Literature at Standard Level with Grade 4 or above, or at Higher Level with Grade 3 or above, meets English requirements at most ISCs. IB English B at Higher Level with Grade 5 or above is also widely accepted. The IB Diploma’s strong emphasis on academic writing makes IB English qualifications particularly well-regarded by pathway providers.
  5. American High School Diploma: A Grade C or above in Grade 12 English from an accredited US high school or American international school typically satisfies IFY English requirements. Some ISCs request a transcript showing four years of English study with cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above in English courses.
  6. Canadian High School Diploma: Grade 12 English at 60% or above from a recognised Canadian provincial curriculum (Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, etc.) is accepted at most ISCs. The requirement may be higher — 65–70% — at Russell Group-pathway ISCs like Durham or Leeds.
  7. WAEC / WASSCE / NECO (West Africa): A Grade C6 or above in English Language at WASSCE or NECO is typically accepted for IFY English entry. The qualification must be accompanied by a scratch card for online verification. Accepted at most ISCs with West African student cohorts.
  8. KCSE (Kenya): A Grade C+ or above in English at KCSE is accepted at several ISCs for IFY entry. The specific grade threshold varies by centre — confirm with the ISC or UNILINK Education.
  9. Malaysia SPM: A Grade C or above in SPM English Language (1119) is accepted at most ISCs for IFY entry. Students with SPM English at B+ or A may meet higher thresholds equivalent to IELTS 6.0+.
  10. HKDSE (Hong Kong): Level 3 or above in HKDSE English Language is typically accepted as equivalent to IELTS 6.0+ for foundation entry. Level 2 may satisfy lower-tier entry requirements at some ISCs.
  11. Irish Leaving Certificate: Ordinary Level English at Grade O4 or above, or Higher Level English at Grade H6 or above, is accepted at most ISCs for IFY entry.

Important caveats: high school English qualifications generally apply only to foundation-level programmes (IFY, IYO), not to pre-master’s programmes. Pre-master’s entry nearly always requires a dedicated English proficiency test result, even if your undergraduate degree was taught in English. Some ISCs will accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your undergraduate institution in lieu of an English test for pre-master’s entry, but this is the exception rather than the rule. UNILINK can advise on which ISCs accept MOI letters for the 2026/27 cycle.

Programme-Level Score Requirements: Foundation vs Pre-Master’s

English entry thresholds differ significantly between foundation and pre-master’s programmes, reflecting the different starting points and progression expectations of each route. Here is how the score bands map across programme levels for 2026/27 entry.

International Foundation Year (IFY) English Requirements

Foundation programmes are designed for students who have completed secondary education but do not yet meet undergraduate entry requirements. English thresholds at this level are correspondingly lower:

  1. Two-semester IFY (standard route): Typically IELTS 5.0 overall with 5.0 in Writing and no band below 4.5. PTE equivalent: approximately 42–46 overall. This is the most common entry point for foundation students.
  2. Three-semester IFY (extended route): Typically IELTS 4.5 overall with no band below 4.0. PTE equivalent: approximately 36–40. The extended route includes additional English language modules in the first semester.
  3. One-semester IFY (accelerated route): Typically IELTS 5.5 overall with 5.0 in Writing and no band below 5.0. For students with stronger English who need only a short academic preparation period before undergraduate entry.

High school English qualifications (see section above) can replace these IELTS requirements at most ISCs.

Pre-Master’s English Requirements

Pre-master’s programmes serve graduates who need academic and English preparation before master’s study. The higher starting level is reflected in the English thresholds:

  1. IELTS 5.5 band (no band below 5.5): Accepted at Cardiff ISC, Leeds ISC, Royal Holloway ISC, Strathclyde ISC (2-semester route), Bath ISC (2-semester route), Huddersfield ISC, and LJMU ISC. This is the lowest entry threshold in the Study Group pre-master’s network and provides access to two Russell Group universities (Cardiff, Leeds).
  2. IELTS 6.0 band (no band below 5.5): Accepted at Durham ISC, Sheffield ISC, Aberdeen ISC (Writing 6.0 required), Sussex ISC, Surrey ISC, and Kingston ISC. This threshold opens access to three additional Russell Group universities.
  3. IELTS 6.0 band (all bands 6.0): A higher threshold required by some programmes within ISCs for specific progression routes — particularly law, journalism, and language-related master’s degrees that demand stronger English from the outset.
  4. One-semester pre-master’s: Typically requires IELTS 6.0 with all bands 5.5 or 6.0. The compressed format assumes students arrive with stronger English and need less language support before progression.

Pre-master’s programmes nearly always require a dedicated English test score. High school English qualifications, medium-of-instruction letters, and undergraduate English marks are rarely accepted for pre-master’s entry. The rationale is that pre-master’s students are one step from postgraduate study, where English demands are high, and standardised test scores provide the most reliable predictor of success.

Score Conversion Reference: IELTS to PTE to TOEFL to Duolingo to LanguageCert

Understanding how scores convert between test systems is essential when comparing ISC entry requirements. The following conversion reference is based on Study Group’s published equivalency tables for the 2026/27 academic cycle. These are the conversion ratios used by ISC admissions teams when assessing applications — not unofficial or third-party estimates.

IELTS 5.5 Equivalent (Pre-Master’s Entry Level)

  1. PTE Academic: 51 overall with 51 in each skill
  2. TOEFL iBT (legacy, pre-Jan 2026): 72 overall, typically Reading 18 · Writing 17 · Listening 17 · Speaking 20
  3. TOEFL iBT (revised, post-Jan 2026): approximately 4 on the revised scale
  4. Duolingo: Not directly accepted at IELTS 5.5 level at most ISCs; Royal Holloway accepts Duolingo 95–100
  5. LanguageCert Academic SELT: 60 overall with 60 in each skill
  6. LanguageCert International ESOL: High Pass at 33/50 per skill

IELTS 6.0 Equivalent (Pre-Master’s Entry Level)

  1. PTE Academic: 59 overall with 51 in each skill (standard threshold); 59 in each skill for higher-band-requirement programmes
  2. TOEFL iBT (legacy, pre-Jan 2026): 78 overall, typically Reading 18 · Writing 17 · Listening 17 · Speaking 20
  3. TOEFL iBT (revised, post-Jan 2026): approximately 4.5 on the revised scale
  4. Duolingo: 110 overall with 100 in each sub-score (Durham ISC); 120 overall with specific sub-scores (Aberdeen ISC: Literacy 95 · Comprehension 95 · Conversation 95 · Production 105)
  5. LanguageCert Academic SELT: 65 overall with 60 in each skill
  6. CEFR: B2 with Merit or Distinction

IELTS 6.5 Equivalent (Typical Direct Master’s Entry)

For reference, the direct master’s entry threshold at most Russell Group universities is IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each band). Pre-master’s students are expected to reach this level — or an internal equivalent — by the end of the programme. The conversion:

  1. PTE Academic: 63–67 overall with 59 in each skill
  2. TOEFL iBT (legacy): 88–92 overall with minimum section scores around 20–22
  3. Duolingo: 120–125 overall
  4. LanguageCert Academic SELT: 70 overall with 65 in each skill
  5. CEFR: B2 with Distinction, or C1

Students who enter a pre-master’s at IELTS 5.5 and progress through two semesters of academic English instruction should realistically target a 1.0–1.5 band improvement — from 5.5 to 6.5. This is the core value proposition of the pre-master’s: it delivers the English improvement in a structured academic environment rather than requiring you to achieve it through self-study before arrival.

Which Test Should You Choose? A Practical Decision Framework

The choice of English test is not simply a matter of preference — it is a strategic decision that affects your visa application, your eligibility across ISCs, and your timeline. Here is a decision framework based on UNILINK Education’s experience processing English test results for over 300 pathway applicants:

  1. If you may need a pre-sessional English course in the UK: Take IELTS Academic for UKVI. No other test gives you this flexibility. A UKVI IELTS result opens every door: direct pathway entry at any ISC, pre-sessional English at any ISC, and visa compliance across all scenarios. The additional cost of UKVI IELTS over standard IELTS is marginal compared with the risk of discovering mid-application that your test is insufficient.

  2. If you are confident of direct pathway entry and want the fastest results: Consider PTE Academic UKVI (48-hour results, automated scoring) or Duolingo (48-hour results, at-home testing, lowest cost) if your target ISCs accept it. Confirm ISC acceptance before booking. PTE Academic UKVI retains SELT status; Duolingo does not, so the Duolingo route only works if your visa scenario does not require a SELT.

  3. If you have already taken a non-UKVI test and scored well: Check your target ISC’s acceptance policy. Durham, Sheffield, Leeds, and Cardiff all accept standard IELTS Academic and PTE Academic for direct pre-master’s entry. You may not need to retake a UKVI version if you are entering the pathway directly. UNILINK can verify this for your specific ISC and programme combination.

  4. If you are applying for International Foundation Year and have strong high school English grades: Check whether your qualification is on the accepted list. Indian Standard XII English at 70%, O Level English at Grade C, or IB English at Grade 4 could eliminate the need for any separate English test — saving time, money, and test-day stress.

  5. If you are in a country with limited UKVI test centre availability: Plan 8–12 weeks ahead. UKVI IELTS and UKVI PTE sessions fill quickly in countries with fewer test centres. If wait times are prohibitive, explore whether your target ISC accepts Duolingo (at-home, no centre required) or a non-UKVI IELTS result for direct entry.

  6. If you have a marginal score in one skill: Consider taking a test where you can improve your weakest skill. Duolingo’s integrated format tends to produce more balanced sub-scores. PTE Academic’s automated scoring eliminates examiner subjectivity in Writing and Speaking. IELTS offers One Skill Retake at selected centres, allowing you to retake a single module rather than the entire test.

UNILINK Education’s default recommendation for all pathway applicants in 2026/27 remains: book IELTS Academic for UKVI as your primary test. Its universal acceptance, UKVI compliance, and the One Skill Retake option make it the lowest-risk choice. If your score is borderline, supplement with a Duolingo test (low cost, quick turnaround) as a backup that several ISCs will accept.

FAQ

Q: Can I use the same English test result for both my pathway programme and my visa application?

A: Yes, if the test is a UKVI-approved SELT. IELTS Academic for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, PSI Skills for English UKVI, and Trinity ISE UKVI satisfy both the ISC’s admission requirement and the Home Office’s visa requirement in a single test. If you use a non-SELT test for admission (e.g., Duolingo, standard IELTS Academic), you may need a separate SELT for the visa — doubling your testing burden. This is why UNILINK strongly recommends a UKVI IELTS as your primary test.

Q: My English is at IELTS 5.0. Can I still access a pre-master’s programme?

A: Yes, but indirectly. You will likely need a pre-sessional English course before the pre-master’s. For example, a student with IELTS 5.0 could take a 10-week pre-sessional English course at a Study Group ISC, complete it successfully, and then progress to the pre-master’s programme (which requires IELTS 5.5 or 6.0 equivalent). This route adds time and cost — typically £3,500–£5,000 for the pre-sessional course — but keeps the pathway open. You must take a UKVI SELT to access the pre-sessional English course, as this is a visa requirement.

Q: Are online English tests like Duolingo and IELTS Online accepted equally by all ISCs?

A: No. Acceptance of online/at-home tests varies significantly across ISCs. Durham ISC accepts Duolingo; Sheffield ISC accepts Duolingo (with some programme-specific restrictions); Aberdeen ISC accepts Duolingo with specific sub-score requirements; many other ISCs do not accept online-only tests at all for pre-master’s entry. Foundation programmes are generally more flexible. Additionally, online tests are almost never UKVI SELTs — they satisfy admission requirements but not visa requirements. Always verify with the specific ISC or with UNILINK Education before relying on an online test result.

Q: How long is my English test score valid for ISC applications?

A: Most ISCs require that your English test score be no more than two years old at the programme start date. This follows the Home Office’s validity window for visa purposes. If your IELTS was taken in June 2024 and your programme starts in September 2026, your score is at the boundary — apply early in the cycle and confirm validity with the ISC. For tests taken more than two years before the programme start date, you will almost certainly need to sit a new test.

Q: I have a degree taught in English. Can this replace an English test for pre-master’s entry?

A: In most cases, no. Study Group ISCs generally do not accept medium-of-instruction (MOI) letters or English-taught degrees as substitutes for a standardised English test at the pre-master’s level. There are occasional exceptions for degrees from majority-English-speaking countries (UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland), but these are handled on a case-by-case basis. Foundation programmes are more flexible on this point. UNILINK Education advises treating the MOI route as a backup option, not a primary strategy — take a UKVI IELTS to secure your application.
